Introducing the Greifswald Mire Centre
The Greifswald Mire Centre (GMC) is a cooperation of the University of Greifswald, the Michael Succow Foundation and the Institute of Sustainable Development of Landscapes of the Earth (German: Institut für Dauerhaft Umweltgerechte Entwicklung von Naturräumen der Erde, DUENE e.V.), which are all based in Greifswald, Germany.
As a science-policy-practice interface, the GMC works on all peatland related questions – locally and globally – with 50 peatland experts of various disciplines concentrated in one place. They offer science-based solutions for social challenges.
The GMC coordinates the "Global Peatland Database", the largest database of distribution and status of peatlands worldwide. The extensive library "Peatland and Nature Conservation International Library“ (PeNCIL) is part of the GMC. The Greifswald Mire Centre is also a founding member of the Global Peatlands Initiative.
MoorWissen summarizes fundamental knowledge about peatlands and presents sustainable land use strategies for bogs and fens of Central Europe. Research projects and best practice examples of the GMC and its partners report on experiences and possibilities of sustainable peatland utilisation.
